Japan FM: Have patience on Iran, let sanctions work

Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gamba urged Israel to show restraint in its policy on Iran in discussions with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman during a visit Wednesday, Israel Radio reported.

According to the report, in his meetings, Gamba emphasized that the sanctions imposed by the international community are working and that Israel should continue to allow them to play out.

The Japanese foreign minister called Netanyahu, sitting shiva for his father, and told him that the treatment of the Iranian nuclear issue requires patience. A spokesman for Gamba said Netanyahu responded that Israel does not want war.

Gamba also met with his counterpart Avigdor Lieberman and emphasized that Japan shares Israel's concern over the Iranian nuclear program. He said the international pressure exerted on Tehran was unprecedented and has already shown some significant results.

Regarding the possibility of attacking Iran's nuclear facilities, Japan's foreign minister asked Lieberman to ensure that Israel exercise self-restraint.
