Jerusalem Municipality denies Arab house demolitions planned

Mayor Nir Barkat does not intend to go ahead with demolitions of illegal construction by Arabs in east Jerusalem, a Jerusalem Municipality source said Tuesday, flatly denying allegations by municipal council member Meir Margalit.

Earlier Tuesday, Margalit claimed to have unofficially been informed that Barkat was about to go ahead with razing houses in east Jerusalem.

The demolitions had been planned in early March and were postponed at Prime Minister Netanyahu’s request so as not to jeopardize Israel’s relations with the US over the potential peace talks with the Palestinians.

However, municipality sources claimed the story to be “simply not true.”
