Jewish group lauds Greece for policy on flotilla

The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations on Sunday praised Greece for its decision to prevent a flotilla of ships from using its territory to set sail to Hamas-ruled Gaza.
The Jewish advocacy group encouraged Athens to keep monitoring ships in the eastern Mediterranean whose aim was to take part in the flotilla. "We express our deep support and appreciation to the government of Greece for taking decisive and appropriate action consistent with international law to prevent the confrontational  flotilla of ships from leaving Greek ports,” said Richard B. Stone, chairman, and Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.
“The resolve demonstrated by [Greek] Prime Minister [George] Papendreou and Minister for Citizen Protection [Christos] Papoutsis, who announced the ban, to halt this incendiary challenge to Israel’s legal maritime blockade sets an example of strong moral and political leadership for the international community.  It also reflects the fundamental values shared by Greece and the United States.”
