Jewish group to bolster Hebrew studies in Disapora

The World Zionist Organization will launch a new initiative aimed at supporting the study of Hebrew at Jewish schools around the world, it announced on Tuesday.
This summer the group will send 15 Hebrew teachers to countries throughout Latin America where they will teach the language to students at Jewish schools. The project seeks to reverse a perceived decrease in the study of Hebrew in the Diaspora brought about by rising tuition costs.
“The decrease in the number of Hebrew students around the world negatively affects ties to Zionism and the motivation to make aliya,” said Avraham Duvdevani, the WZO chairman. “There can be no Zionist leadership that does not speak Hebrew. The trend causes a serious danger. If ignored, future generations of Diaspora Jews will be cut off from the Hebrew language, an inseparable part of Jewish identity.”
