Judge shot dead in western Baghdad

Gunmen using pistols fitted with silencers have shot dead a judge and wounded his nine-year-old son as they were leaving their western Baghdad home in a car, Iraqi police said.

Police officials identified the judge as Mohammed Abdul-Ghafur, a Sunni Muslim who worked in an eastern Baghdad court.

They said the attack took place Wednesday morning in the mainly Sunni district of Yarmouk.

The officials did not give a motive for the attack, but assassinating judges is not uncommon in Baghdad. Such killings are believed to be primarily carried out by hit men hired by organized crime bosses. Sectarian motives also are thought to be behind some of the attacks.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
