Kosovo president resigns after court ruling

PRISTINA, Kosovo — Kosovo's President Fatmir Sejdiu said Monday he has resigned from his post after the Constitutional Court found he violated the country's constitution by holding office and the leadership of his party simultaneously.

Sejdiu said his decision was taken to "respect to the institutions and the decisions taken by them." He said he did not feel he violated the constitution but the court "thought otherwise."

Sejdiu is the head of the Democratic League of Kosovo, the party of iconic late President Ibrahim Rugova. The ruling comes amid a leadership challenge in the party before a general election scheduled for next year.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, a move that is contested by Belgrade.
