"Lebanese factions must unite against Israeli madness"

Lebanese Druze leader Walid Jumblatt denied on Tuesday that he had called for the invasion of Syria by the US Army, stressing that while he had at times expressed mild criticism of the Assad regime, he had never called for military action against "the Syrian people and the Syrian leadership." He stressed that the coalition and Iranian-backed opposition in Lebanon must unite against "Israel's madness."

En route to Damascus, Jumblatt discussed with the As-Safir newspaper such topics as UN Security Council Resolution 1559, which asserts Lebanon's sovereignty, and the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri in a massive explosion in Beirut in 2005.

Jumblatt, of Lebanon's Western-backed 14 March coalition, reportedly added that his words may have been misconstrued. "I do not see a reason for [violence], especially as an historic reconciliation has already begun with the visit of Prime Minister [Sa'ad] Hariri to Damascus."

Jumblatt is scheduled to meet in the near future with Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
