Livni: Gov't has plan to enact unconstitutional legislation

Opposition leader Tzipi Livni said Sunday that the government was carrying out an "organized plan to legislate unconstitutional laws," Army Radio reported. Livni made the comments while speaking at Sapir College in the western Negev.
According to Livni the bills the government is attempting to enact will allow then to choose Supreme Court justices that will not intervene in the legislative process. The government is also attempting to weaken the media, Livni contended.
The Kadima leader intimated that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu hoped to strengthen his hold on power through the spate of new legislation.
"I understood this when Netanyahu made a deal, selecting a member of the National Union to sit on the Knesset Judicial Selection Committee, rather than choosing a member of the largest opposition party [Kadima] as is the standard," Livni said.
