"This has not been an easy week for the Israeli people; it has been an especially difficult week for the Israeli prime minister," Kadima and opposition leader Tzipi Livni said at a Knesset session on Wednesday afternoon. When making a decision on the issue of captured IDF soldier St.-Sgt. Gilad Schalit, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu must consider Schalit as a human being and a son, but also to "assess the repercussions of a deal with a terrorist organization - be it Hamas or Hizbullah - on the future and security of Israel," she said. The opposition leader stressed that the government must not forget "the danger posed by the released terrorists, as well as the message conveyed to those who risked their lives to bring them to justice and imprison them." Schalit, Livni said, "is the child of all of us... but he is an IDF soldier who was out protecting civilians. This is how things are in Israel." She added that it was more important to consider the ideals on which the IDF was established, its heroic operations in the past, its decision-making process and deterrence. "In my opinion, the public mostly wants its leadership to make a decision after having taken all aspects into account, to look into the public eye and justify every decision, even the most difficult of all," she said.
