Livni: Israel looks unstable because of Naveh appointment

Opposition chair Tzipi Livni has called on fellow MKs to extend the term of Maj.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi as IDF chief of staff until the appropriate replacement is found. Livni, in an interview with Israel Radio Thursday morning mentioned that she made the request for other Knesset members to resist engaging with Defense Minister Ehud Barak's "privacy," alluding to his soured relationship with Ashkenazi.
According to Livni, the appointment of an interim chief of staff is a "strange curve" that doesn't show Israel's stability at a time when several other countries in the Middle East are "boiling."
MK Gilad Arden (Likud) agreed that the fitting thing to have done would have been to keep Ashkenazi in his role until the replacemenet was appointed, but acknowledged that the temporary appointment of Maj.-Gen. Yair Naveh was acceptable because of the poor relationship the current chief of staff and Barak.
