Livni slams gov't's 'Draconian and anti-Zionist laws'

Opposition leader Tzipi Livni on Monday spoke out about a spate of new proposed legislation which she labeled "Draconian and anti-Zionist laws."

The Kadima leader made the comments at a Knesset discussion of a bill by which any justice appointed by the Supreme Court president would face a public hearing in the Knesset Law, Constitution and Justice Committee, which would have the right to disqualify the judge from serving in the High Court. However, Livni also attacked as anti-democratic two bills limiting the ability of foreign governments and international organizations to contribute to Israeli NGOs.

"If all these bills succeed, the govt will be able to do whatever it wants," Livni told the Knesset.

She accused Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu of acting out of fear of the "right-wing extremists" in his coalition.
