Merkel: Mideast awakens memories of communist fall

MUNICH — German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday drew a parallel between protests in the Middle East and the events that ended communism in eastern Europe. She said that "there will be change in Egypt."
Merkel said that pictures from the region "awaken memories of what we experienced in Europe."
Merkel, who grew up in communist East Germany, says: "Who would we be if we did not say, we stand on the side of these people who are expressing what bothers them?"
The German leader told an annual security conference that Egypt needs peaceful change but didn't specify what that might look like. She said the West can't simply export its model of democracy to other regions.
