Merkel phones Mubarak, urges restraint on violence in Egypt

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday telephoned Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, and urged him to restrain violence by security forces during ongoing anti-government protests in Egypt, reported Reuters.
"The Chancellor again insisted that the Egyptian security forces refrain from violence and that freedom of assembly and communication be allowed," Reuters said quoting a statement by spokesman Steffen Seibert.
"She expressed expectations that the president and his new government take a committed approach to the announced reforms," the statement said according to Reuters. "The Chancellor said it was essential to conduct dialogue with the people, especially the youth, and to respond to their justifiable concerns."
