Merkel urges Egypt to allow peaceful protests

DAVOS, Switzerland — German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged the Egyptian government to allow peaceful demonstrations.
Merkel told reporters at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Friday that the stability of Egypt was "extremely important but not at the price of freedom of expression."
Egyptian authorities have cracked down on anti-government protesters in recent days and even shut down Internet and cell-phone data service across Egypt Friday to quell the protests.
