Mitchell: Peace talks moving in right direction

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt— President Barack Obama's Mideast peace envoy said Tuesday that the new round of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations is moving in the right direction, but he offered no evidence of progress on the difficult issue of Jewish settlements.
Peace envoy George Mitchell spoke at a news conference after talks between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas — mediated by US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Clinton had pressed Israel to extend a moratorium on new building in West Bank settlements, but when asked at his news conference whether there had been progress on this issue, Mitchell did not answer directly. Instead, he said he and Clinton believe the talks are moving in the right direction "overall."
