MK Schneller: No drunk driving in Israel until Soviet Aliya

MK Otniell Schneller (Kadima) on Tuesday said that there was no drunk driving in Israel prior to the immigration from the former Soviet Union, Israel Radio reported. Schneller's comments came during a Knesset discussion of the budget.
Schneller stated that cultural differences among the former Soviet Union immigrants led to behavioral differences.
Culture and Sport Minister Limor Livnat responded that Schneller's comments were "awful, useless and out of place."
Livnat said that in recent years there has been an increase in drug as well as alcohol usage. "Did they bring the drugs as well?" she asked Schneller.
