Labor Party Chairwoman Shelly Yacimovich on Sunday welcomed Channel 2 anchor Yair Lapid to the political realm.
"Yair Lapid is strong personality who has a lot to offer to the public. That said, Lapid will strengthen those who believe in rightist, conservative economics." she said in a press release. "Lapid- along with [opposition leader Tzipi] Livni and [Prime Minister Binyamin] Netanyahu- represents social values that are opposed to those upheld by the Labor party," she said.
Channel 2 news anchor Yair Lapid informed the station's management that he is resigning in order to enter politics, Israeli media reported on Sunday.
The Knesset has been discussing a bill that would institute a cooling-off period for journalists before they could get elected.
On this topic, Yacimovic said that "although I don't agree with Yair Lapid's views... the entrance into politics of fresh people from various backgrounds will be a positive contribution to the Knesset and to the political realm."
