Munich 11 athlete to be inducted to Sports Hall of Fame

David Berger, a member of the Israel delegation to the 1972 Munich Olympics, is to be posthumously inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, 74 Hauppauge Road, Commack, on Sunday morning, April 21, 2013. The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m.

David Berger was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, a neighborhood of Cleveland. In high school he was a National Merit Scholar who later on won bronze and gold medals in the 1965 and 1969 maccabia games in Israel, (270lb. press; 259lb. snatch; 319lb. clean & jerk; 848lb. total). respectively. In 1969 he was a gold medalist at the U.S. Junior National Weightlifting competition (290lb. press; 255lb. snatch; 340lb. clean & jerk; 920lb total).

David attened Tulane University from 1962 - 1966, where he was an honor student and weightlifter. While a junior at Tulane, he won the NCAA weightlifting title in the 148lb. class. He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Tulane in 1966, and a master's degree in business administration and a doctor of laws degree from Columbia University, both in 1969. In addition to working toward his degrees, David was able to devote time to weightlifting, competing as a light-heavyweight. His father, Benjamin, was quoted as saying, "You may not be the best weightlifter in the world, but you're certainly the smartest!"
