Municipal authorities say general strike to continue

Despite Interior Minister Eli Yishai's declarations that progress had been made in negotiations to end the general strike launched by municipal authorities on Monday, the Union of Local Authorities announced that the strike will continue on Tuesday.
An understanding on most issues had been achieved in negotiations, Yishai said, including the freezing of damaging legislation and the cancellation of the 16 percent value-added tax on water.
However, later on Monday night, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu refused to accept the understandings Yishai spoke of, with Israel Radio quoting Prime Minister's Office sources as saying the municipal authorities' demands would cost "billions of shekels" and that the demands were unrealistic. Netanyahu called on the municipal leaders to halt the strike and return to negotiations in order to reach a satisfactory agreement.
