Navy on alert as Lebanese ships head to Gaza

The Israel Navy continued Sunday to maintain a high level of alert ahead of the possibility that two ships will set sail from Lebanon and try to break the Israel-imposed sea blockade on the Gaza Strip.

According to military source, the IDF was closely following events in Lebanon to see when and if the two ships will set sail for the Gaza Strip. Israel is particularly concerned with the Lebanese flotilla due to the short distance between the countries. The ships will reportedly carry women and medical supplies.

"We have to be on high alert at all times since if they make a run for it, the ships could be in Gaza waters in just a few hours," one officer said.

Defense officials said that the Navy would take extra precautions when trying to stop the ships and planned to operate under more the assumption that terrorist elements or provocateurs will be on board the ships.

On Sunday, the London-based Al Hayat Newspaper, quoted Lebanese authorities who said that they had yet to receive an official request from the organizers of the Lebanese flotilla to sail to the Gaza Strip. According to the report, Lebanese law prohibits ships from sailing to areas like Gaza which are under Israeli control.
