New anti-government protests in Albania

TIRANA, Albania — Albanian opposition parties prepared to hold new rallies in four cities to demand the government's resignation for alleged corruption.

Friday's planned marches came two weeks after three protesters were shot dead during clashes with security forces at an opposition demonstration in the capital, Tirana. Another 150 were injured.

Opposition Socialist officials said supporters will follow a different course this time, avoiding the main government building outside which the Jan. 21 riots occurred.

The governing Democrats refused to resign, and accused the opposition of trying to stage a "coup."

More than a year of simmering political tension over alleged electoral fraud boiled over last month following claims of corruption in a state power plant tender.
