A new commander of the undercover unit in the Border Police's West Bank operations took up his position on Wednesday.
The outgoing commander, who can only be named as Dep.-Cmdr. G.L., headed the unit for three years and oversaw a period when it became the most decorated unit in the Israel Police.
Undercover Border Police officers often disguise themselves as Palestinians and Israeli Arabs and break their cover to make surprise arrests of suspects involved in rioting or other forms of hostile action.
Dozens of anti-terror operations were overseen by him, police said in a statement, adding that he prevented lethal attacks on Israeli civilians. The unit also took part in operations against organized crime. The new commander can only be identified as Dep.-Cmdr. Y.B.
