Obama, Medvedev to meet

US officials said Thursday that US President Barack Obama and Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev plan to meet Friday on the sidelines of UN climate talks as the two countries seek a deal to replace an expired Cold War-era arms control treaty. An official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks, said that the negotiations for a successor to the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty would be the focus of the meeting between the two leaders in Copenhagen.US and Russian negotiators in Geneva have been working intensively to complete a deal to replace the treaty that expired Dec. 5. The US and Russian presidents had initially sought to finish negotiations before the expiration. But talks have bogged down and it now appears a deal is unlikely this year.
