Obama names Panetta as next US defense secretary

WASHINGTON - US President Barack Obama on Thursday nominated CIA director Leon Panetta to be US defense secretary and General David Petraeus to replace him at the spy agency, in a major reset of the US national security team.
Obama also said he would nominate veteran diplomat Ryan Crocker as US ambassador to Afghanistan.
