PA police crack down on Ramallah protest of Mofaz visit

Several hundred Palestinian youths staged a demonstration in Ramallah's central Manara Square Sunday evening to protest a planned visit by Vice Premier Shaul Mofaz to PA President Mahmoud Abbas and against violence by Palestinian security forces at a similar demonstration the day before.
PA security forces were beating male and female protesters with batons and chains in an attempt to prevent them from reaching the Palestinian Authority's Muqata government compound, activists said. Palestinian security forces made a number of arrests and many others were reported injured.
PA police arrested seven protesters at Saturday's demonstration and a number of others were hospitalized after reportedly being beaten by Palestinian security forces. All of those arrested Saturday were eventually released.
