The Palestinian Authority Ministry of Interior decided to release Zakaria al-Zubeidi, former commander of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade in Jenin, in time for Id al-Fitr, Ma'an News Agency reported Saturday.
The former commander of Fatah's military wing was released on bail, pending his trial on Wednesday. Zubeidi's release came after he launched a hunger strike on Friday, in the Jericho prison where he was being held, in protest of his detention without charge.
Zubeidi, who was once wanted by Israel for his role in terrorist attacks, was pardoned a few years ago and later became a member of the PA security forces. However, PA forces arrested him in May as part of a security crackdown in Jenin.
