Paris mayor calls on France to support Palestinian UN bid

Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe on Saturday called on France's government to support Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas's bid to obtain statehood recognition next week at the UN.
In a posting to his Twitter account, Delanoe said that "it is necessary that Palestine be upgraded to observer status at the United Nations and that France support the Palestinian initiative."
France on Thursday indicated it would support the bid, with French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius saying: "I would like to remind you of campaign pledge number 59 of...President Francois Hollande, which said that there would be an international recognition of a Palestinian state."
