Peres condemns women's exclusion, defends haredim

President Shimon Peres condemned women's exclusion while visiting Tel Aviv Chief Rabbi Israel Meir Lau Thursday, but warned that the entire haredi (ultra-Orthodox) community should not be condemned, Army Radio reported.
"We must condemn those who deserve condemnation, but in the name of justice we must distinguish between those who are guilty and those who were dragged into it," Peres said.
He added that while those who are guilty should be charged, that should not allow an entire community to be insulted.
Rabbi Lau responded that the extremists "are lone individuals who do not follow the rabbis. Whoever spits in the face of a seven-year-old girl is not obeying any rabbi."
