Peres: Judicial laws could cause 'historic harm to Israel'

President Shimon Peres addressed the passage through Knesset committee Monday of a bill that would affect judicial appointments, saying that "subverting the independence of the court or casting doubt on its values is likely to cause historic harm to the State of Israel."
"Legislation should only be for empowering the government and not for defining justice, even if if done by a body chosen democratically, it can harm the democratic balance and create a void which can be filled with a lust for power in place of a obligation to serve," the president added in a speech at the swearing-in ceremony of 21 new judges Monday.
