Peres praises Ashkenazi at farewell ceremony

President Shimon Peres expressed his appreciation for outgoing IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi at a farewell party held on Sunday evening at Tel Aviv University.

"Gabi, as president, I express my thankfulness on behalf of the entire country," Peres told Ashkenazi. "Thank you for your wonderful service and excellent leadership."

Peres continued: "The soldiers loved you, equipment was renewed, the military was trained, emergency depots were cleaned and restocked, the territories opened and the terror was forced into a lull. The IDF, the most unique in the world, a moral army, is prepared to protect the country. To provide security for the nation. To serve as a bridge for coming peace."

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak are also expected to speak at the farewell ceremony.
