Peres welcomes Ukrainian counterpart Yanukovych to Israel

Ukranian President Viktor Yanukovych, on a state visit to Israel, was given a warm welcome by President Shimon Peres on Thursday. Peres told his visitor that this was a historic visit because, although Yanukovych had previously been to Israel in his capacity as prime minister, this was the first visit to Israel by a president of Ukraine.
While not ignoring the dark chapters in Ukraine's history with the Jewish people, Peres said that he welcomes Yanukovych as a democratically elected president, who is writing a new chapter in diplomatic relations between his country and Israel.
Yanukovych reminded Peres that Ukraine was among the countries that voted for the partition of Palestine in November 1947, thereby creating conditions for the establishment of the State of Israel, and also thanked Peres for Israel's recognition of Ukraine's independence in 1991.
