Philanthropist Alan Solomont to be sworn in as US ambassador to Spain

Alan Solomont, an early backer of US President Barack Obama's candidacy and major fundraiser, will be sworn-in as the country's ambassador to Spain later on Tuesday. A Boston-based Jewish philanthropist and activist, Solomont created a hugely successful elder care business before becoming a serious Democratic party player. He has also been a supporter of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies, New Israel Fund and J Street. After a hold-up with his Senate confirmation, he was due to officially receive the post Tuesday months after his appointment was announced.
