PLO backtracks on praise for uprising in Tunisia

After a previous statement made by the PLO's Executive Committee praising the Tunisia riots, Ahmed Abdel Rahman, an adviser to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said on Saturday that the PA leadership had not taken an official stance on the situation in the African country.
Rahman said the Executive committee never issued an official statement, and extended condolences to the families of Tunisian victims, Ma'an reported quoting the WAFA news agency.
The remarks came just hours after the Executive Committee lauded the "unprecedented courage of the Tunisian people and their heroic sacrifices for their just rights," Ma'an reported.
The committee also called the Tunisian uprising one "against corruption and oppression."
In related news, Hamas and the Islamic Jihad applauded the protests in Tunisia, with the Islamic Jihad congratulating Tunisians on obtaining freedom "through blood, sacrifices and the expression of free will," reported Ma'an.
