Police on Wednesday arrested a 24-year-old Ashkelon man on suspicion that he shook his infant niece, leaving her in serious condition.
The Ashkelon Magistrate’s court on Wednesday decided to extend the man’s remand until Friday.According to police, about a week ago the baby’s parents took her to Ashkelon’s Barzilay hospital where doctors diagnosed her with internal cranial bleeding. She was then moved to the children’s emergency ward of Beersheba’s Soroka Hospital where she remains in critical condition. Hospital staff at Barzilay notified police after they examined the baby, and reported that they suspected that someone may have shaken the baby, due to the nature of the injuries.
Police said that they interviewed all family members and anyone else who was near the baby before the incident happened, but focused in on the uncle, who they said, linked himself to the baby’s injuries.
Police said the man has no violent criminal record and the family is completely normative by any standard.
