Clashes erupted on Thursday near the Nablus Gate in east Jerusalem after police prevented a protest march it said had been organized by the Palestinian Authority to mark the Arab League decision that Jerusalem was the 2009 "Arab culture capital".
According to police, the protesters began to confront officers after refusing to quit the march. Nine demonstrators have been arrested.
