Police, US troops battle gunmen in E. Afghanistan

KABUL — Attackers have detonated a bomb near a government building in eastern Afghanistan and have holed up in another building nearby, where they are firing on Afghan police and US troops, local police said Monday.
Acting chief of police in the eastern province of Khost, Yaqob Khan, said there were no casualties, mostly because the attackers appeared to have mistaken an abandoned government building for an adjacent police station.
Khan said police had surrounded the attackers and begun to fire on the gunmen with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades. He said US troops from a nearby base were rushed to the scene to assist.
