Portuguese writer who compared Israel to Nazi Germany dies

MADRID — Nobel-winning Portuguese novelist Jose Saramago has died at 87, his publisher said Friday.
During a tour of Israel and the Palestinian territories in 2002, Saramago compared the living conditions in Ramallah to those suffered by Jews at Nazi concentration camps. "We can compare it to what happened in Auschwitz, even if we consider the differences in place and time, it is still the same thing," he said.
Publisher Zeferino Coelho was quoted on the website of the Portuguese paper Publico as saying that Saramago died at his home in Lanzarote, one of Spain's Canary Islands.
Coelho said the author's health had worsened after a recent illness. He provided no further details.
