Public Utility Authority head's ouster on the table

The cabinet will vote on Sunday on a proposed decision to remove Amnon Shapira from his position as head of the Public Utility Authority-Electricity. Shapira has been the head of the regulatory body since 2007. However, he ran afoul of the National Infrastructures Ministry a year ago, according to the ministry, by failing to inform them that he was planning on lowering the base price of electricity in February 2010. The ministry contends he denied repeatedly that he would do so but then went ahead and lowered prices.
Shapira has already had a hearing and the PUA Council has concurred with the finance minister and national infrastructure minister regarding the necessity for his removal from office. If the cabinet approves the decision, Shapira will have one month to appeal.
