Qatar suspends Yemen embassy ops, pulls staff

CAIRO - Qatar temporarily suspended the operations of its embassy in Yemen on Thursday and withdrew its diplomatic staff from the country, television channel Al Jazeera said, following a flare-up of violence there.
More than 40 Yemenis were killed in pitched street battles in the capital Sanaa on Thursday as fighting aimed at ending President Ali Abdullah Saleh's three-decade-long rule threatened to ignite civil war.
"Qatar suspends the work of its embassy in Sanaa on a temporary basis and withdraws members of it diplomatic mission," Al Jazeera said in a newsflash.
The report comes after Britain's decision on Thursday to reduce staffing at its embassy in Yemen due to the deteriorating situation. Foreign Secretary William Hague also urged British nationals to leave the country immediately.
