Rabbi Eliyahu Deri, father of former Shas leader, dies

Rabbi Eliyahu Deri, father of former Shas leader Aryeh Deri, passed away on Sunday night at Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem’s Ein Karem at the aged of 79, after having been hospitalized for several days.
Shas chairman Eli Yishai said in a statement issued by his office that he and the entire Shas movement “were saddened by the passing of Rabbi Eliyahu Deri who did much work for the education of Israeli children. We send our deepest condolences to all the family.”
Deri was born in Meknes, Morocco, and came to Israel in 1968.
The funeral was conducted on Monday afternoon and the burial took place at Jerusalem’s Har Menuchot cemetery. Rabbi Eliyahu Deri is survived by his wife and five children.
