Rami Levy initiates sale of cheap, healthy food package

A few weeks after Hadassah University Medical Center’s chief clinical dietitian Dorit Adler bemoaned the lack of "food security" for many Israelis, supermarket chain owner Rami Levy initiated a first-ever program to sell basic, healthful foods cheaply.

Adler and Levy on Tuesday launched a cooperative effort to sell a number of nutritious foods, which Adler chose, at low prices so even the economically disadvantaged could buy them. The foods will be available at all Shivuk Hashikma branches. Levy, who always has his ear to the ground to detect trends, said he saw his company as having a "social role" and hoped other retailers would do the same.

Adler noted that many of the cheapest foods, including processed products with high sugar and fat content and simple carbohydrates, are not healthful. The announcement was made at the fifth Israel Medical Convention organized by the Hadassah Medical Organization at Jerusalem’s International Convention Center all day Tuesday in cooperation with Bnei Zion and Assaf Harofeh Medical Centers.
