Defense Minister Ehud Barak said that Israel intends to retaliate against Lebanon after last week's incident on the border, London-based newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat
reported on Wednesday.
Barak reportedly informed French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchenr that Israel "intends to undertake a large-scale military operation...to avenge the killing of a senior Israeli officer."
According to Asharq Al-Awsat
, this led to French President Nicolas Sarkozy and US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton to intervene and attempt to prevent another war between Israel and Lebanon.
