Report: Israel fires warning shots at aid ship to Gaza

Israeli navy forces on Monday fired warning shots at a Malaysian ship carrying aid to Gaza as it neared the shore, forcing it to turn back toward Egyptian waters, AFP reported quoting the vessel's organizer.

"The MV Finch, carrying sewage pipes to Gaza, had warning shots fired at it by Israeli forces in the Palestinian security zone this morning at 0654 Jordan time," Shamsul Azhar from the Perdana Global Peace Foundation was quoted as saying.

"The vessel was in the Palestinian security zone, about 400 meters from the Gaza shoreline, when they were intercepted by Israeli naval forces," Azhar told AFP, adding the ship was now anchored 30 nautical miles away in Egyptian territory.

The Perdana Foundation is run by former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, who was a strong critic of the West and Israel over the Palestinian conflict during his term in power. His organization was also involved in the "Freedom Flotilla" operation which ended with the Israeli raid of the Mavi Marmara.
