Reporters demand to attend pleas for Katsav sentencing

A group of legal reporters appealed to the Supreme Court on Wednesday against the exclusion of the media from the pleas for sentencing in former president Moshe Katsav’s rape trial.
The journalists, represented by Yuval Yoaz, argued that the Tel Aviv District Court judges hearing the case harmed the public interest and the public’s right to receive information by refusing to let reporters attend the critical stage of the trial.
The reporters also appealed the lower court’s decision to refuse journalists access to trial transcripts and evidentiary documents.
Last week the Tel Aviv court decided to approve media presence in the actual sentencing, but not in the pre-sentencing arguments for fear that the identity of Katsav’s victims be exposed.
