Rotem slams bill calling for Rabbinate to okay IDF rabbi

MK David Rotem (Israel Beiteinu) on Tuesday referred to as "ridiculous" a new initiative proposed by Shas MK Nisim Ze'ev by which the chief military rabbi would be appointed by the Chief Rabbinate, in an interview with Army Radio.
"I would agree to this bill if it was established along with it that in order to serve as Israel's Chief Rabbi, one had to serve in the IDF," said Rotem. "It is inconceivable that outside bodies, with all due respect to them, will interfere in IDF appointments," he added.
Rotem said he did not believe the bill had a chance of passing in Knesset and he said he would ask Israel Beiteinu members to staunchly oppose it.
