Sarkozy visits Rome seeking accord on EU borders

ROME - French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrives in Rome on Tuesday looking for a deal on tightening European Union frontier controls after tensions with Italy over North African immigrants trying to cross the border into France.
Sarkozy, facing pressure on the immigration issue from the far-right National Front ahead of next year's presidential election, wants to reach a deal with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi before taking joint proposals to EU partners.
The visit follows deep discord over the issue between Paris and Rome, which have also been at odds over French takeover bids of Italian companies and policy in Libya.
