Settlements preempt Palestinian state, says PLO chief

PLO chief of mission to the United States Maen Areikat said that Palestinians "would like to see the US play a role that is more even-handed," in an interview with CNN just minutes before Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu addressed a joint session of the US Congress on Tuesday.
Pointing to statements by Netanyahu, Areikat said the prime minister "has made clear" that settlements are meant to change the reality on the ground. "Settlements are meant to preempt the Palestinian state," he added.
He also addressed chances for returning to the negotiating table, saying that if Palestinians "are presented with a clear process ... with an end game, I think that our leadership will consider seriously" rejoining talks.
