Sudan's Bashir says China ties not hurt by southern split

BEIJING - Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir said his government's strong bond with China will not be weakened by Beijing's ties with secessionist south Sudan, in remarks published on Monday before the indicted leader began a visit to his powerful patron.

The impending secession of Sudan's oil-rich south is likely to feature in Bashir's talks with President Hu Jintao, whose government is a major buy of Sudanese crude.

Beijing has been building political and aid ties with the emerging state in southern Sudan even as it continues to be one of the major supporters of Bashir, who faces indictment from the International Criminal Court over war crimes charges stemming from long-running fighting in the Darfur region.

Bashir told China's official Xinhua news agency he was not troubled by Beijing's dual loyalties in his country.
