Syria and Nicaragua seek UNHRC seats

Syria, Nicaragua and the Republic of Congo are among 14 nations vying for 15 spots on the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The United Nations General Assembly is set to hold elections for 15 of the 47 member slots on the UNHRC on May 20.
UNHRC members are elected for three years terms.
Elections are held annually for one third of the body's membership. Earlier this month, in an unprecedented move, the UN General Assembly suspended Libya's membership. Its seat on the council remains empty and it will not be replaced in the upcoming elections.
