Syria says army unit ambushed in Banias, one killed

BEIRUT - An official Syrian source said on Sunday an "armed group" had ambushed an army patrol in the city of Banias, killing one soldier and wounding others, according to the official SANA news agency.
The source said the incident took place on the Latakia-Tartous road where the "armed group" was "hiding to the east of the road between the trees and buildings".
Syrian authorities have blamed the violence in pro-democracy protests shaking the country for the last three weeks on armed groups. Witnesses and activists say security forces have fired on protesters, killing dozens.
